This Month in Mix
Audio professionals gathered together at the 21st Annual Technical Excellence & Creativity Awards, held October 8 at the New York Marriott Marquis in New York City, during the annual AES convention. In addition to 24 awards for Technical and Creative Achievement, a sell-out crowd comprising the pro audio industry's finest creative talents witnessed the induction of legendary producer/engineer Arif Marden into the TEC Awards Hall of Fame, and the presentation of the prestigious Les Paul Award to David Byrne. Atlantic Records founder, Ahmet Eregun presented the Hall of Fame Award to Mardin, who produced chart-topping hits for artists such as Aretha Franklin, the Bee Gees, Bette Midler and many others. Highlighting the presentation was a surprise performance of “Through the Fire” by Chaka Khan, in tribute to Mardin. The Les Paul Award was presented by the much-loved recording innovator and guitarist Les Paul, and was accepted by Byrne’s friend and fellow Nonesuch recording artist, Laurie Anderson. Byrne, currently in Europe for another project, sent a “thank you” video which was screened at the show.
