Shelby Lynne Just a Little Lovin album cover

Shelby Lynne, Just a Little Lovin’

Lynne’s 2008 release on the Lost Highway label is the singer’s tenth career release and her tribute to British soul singer Dusty Springfield’s 1969 release, Dusty in Memphis, offering Lynne’s heartfelt interpretations of nine tracks from Springfield’s album, in addition to Lynne’s original song titled “Pretend.” Lynne followed her 2005 release, Suit Yourself—part of which she recorded in her home studio in California before completing that project in Nashville—by recording Just a Little Lovin’ in Capitol Studios (Hollywood) “with the dream team of producer Phil Ramone (who engineered Springfield's original recording of ‘The Look of Love’) and Al Schmitt; the project was recorded live to 2-inch tape over five days at Capitol Studio A,” as Mix editor Sarah Jones noted in her March 2008 Cool Spin review. “Gone are the glamorous, soaring orchestral arrangements of the original recordings; instead, spare, graceful arrangements of piano, guitar, bass and drums frame Lynne's supple, smoky voice. Lynne inhabits the music like an actor becomes a character—while showing her own quiet vulnerability and restraint.” And, of course, Schmitt is no stranger to the Grammy Awards, having won 16 of them over an illustrious career that spans five decades, most recently for Chick Corea’s The Ultimate Adventure in 2006.
