Natalie Cole Still Unforgettable album cover

Natalie Cole, Still Unforgettable

Natalie Cole’s 1991 release, Unforgettable: With Love, which unforgettably featured Cole’s overdubbed duet on the title track with her iconic father, Nat “King” Cole, and was the breakout commercial success of her career, peaking at Number One on the Billboard chart and reportedly selling 5 million units. It also claimed three Grammy Awards: Record of the Year, Album of the Year and Best Traditional Pop Performance. Al Schmitt was among a cadre of engineers (which included Mix magazine technical editor Kevin Becka) that worked on this project; Schmitt also co-engineered Cole’s 2002 album, Ask a Woman Who Knows (also nominated in the Best Engineered—Non-Classical category), along with Elliot Scheiner. The 2008 Still Unforgettable sees Cole taking the reins as producer for the first time, and once again reinterpreting classic jazz-pop standards from the American songbook and reprising a duet with her father, this time on “Walkin’ My Baby Back Home.” Steve Genewick and Bill Schnee were on-hand to capture Cole’s big band and orchestral ensembles at Capitol Studios in Hollywood, while Schmitt provided his mixing expertise.
