Strauss: Don Juan, Death and Transfiguration
Lawrence Rock, engineer (Lorin Maazel & New York Philharmonic), Deutsche Grammophon
In 2006, Deutsche Grammophon and Decca collaborated on a new model for releasing symphonic recordings: DG Concerts (Decca Concerts on Decca), a partnership with major orchestras around the globe that combines digital downloads with traditional CD releases; the labels release a handful of recordings for digital downloading, and one season highlight concert on CD. This first CD release in the DG Concerts series showcases an illustrative Strauss program, featuring the epic tone poems Don Juan and Death and Transfiguration, along with Der Rosenkavalier Suite. The works were performed by the New York Philharmonic under the baton of music director Lorin Maazel, who has led more than 150 orchestras in more than 5,000 opera and concert performances.
Recorded by NY Phil audio director Lawrence Rock, who received a 2005 Grammy Award for Best Classical Album as co-producer (with composer John Adams) for On the Transmigration of Souls. Rock produced the Grammy-nominated Sweeney Todd: Live at the New York Philharmonic and the 10-CD set Kurt Masur at the New York Philharmonic, and received a Grammy Award in 1997 for a recording with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra.
