Howard Benson
Benson produced several albums last year, including The Starting Line’s Direction, Five Score and Seven Years Ago by Relient K, Melee’s Devil and Angels and Stay Inside’s Sound the Alarm. But almost certainly he’s on this list because he produced one of 2007’s top-selling albums: Daughtry, by the band named after and fronted by American Idol “rocker” Chris Daughtry. (Cue “It’s Not Over”!) It makes sense that Benson would helm that slice of heavy pop-rock, as he has an extensive career working with both hard rock bands and pop acts, dating back to the ’80s. The producer/arranger/programmer/keyboardist has been at the producer’s desk for such acts as Motorhead, Sepultura, P.O.D., Papa Roach, All American Rejects, Hoobastank and My Chemical Romance; quite a broad range of styles in there, to be sure.
