Joe Chiccarelli
In a career that goes back to the late 1970s, Joe Chiccarelli has worked with hundreds of different artists in a number of capacities—producer, engineer, mixer, sometimes all three on the same project. As an engineer, he’s been behind the board for acts such as Frank Zappa, Journey, Joan Baez, Hole, Bon Jovi, Verve Pipe, Etta James and so many others. As a producer, he’s been in charge on albums by Oingo Boingo, Al Stewart, Poco, American Music Club, Pat Benatar, Stan Ridgway and more. For this year’s Grammy nomination, NARAS cites these four diverse albums: The Shins’ Wincing the Night Away, the Burden Brothers’ Mercy, Oxbow’s Narcotic Story and Kurt Elling’s Nightmoves. We should also note that Chiccarelli engineered one of last year’s most interesting albums, too: The White Stripes’ Icky Thump.
