Modern rock producer Godrich has been working with the always surprising Radiohead since the mid-'90s, but he has also applied his careful layered production values to acclaimed releases by Paul McCartney, Beck, Travis and more. This year’s project, Radiohead’s In Rainbows, is extremely effective, juxtaposing the band’s typically complex sounds with stand-out, spare arrangements. In Rainbows also made news this year when the band made low-res tracks available to fans for download on the honor system—a decision that garnered loads of press but can’t have done Godrich’s work justice.
