Producer of the Year (Non-Classical)

Jan 28, 2008 6:04 PM

Mark Ronson

We’re not implying any favoritism when we note that Mark Ronson had one helluva year in 2006-2007, producing two of the most intriguing acts England has sent across the pond in a while: Lily Allen (Alright, Still) and Amy Winehouse (Back to Black). The latter effort has been somewhat overshadowed by Winehouse’s tabloid-worthy adventures of late, but make no mistake about it: It’s a beautifully produced slice of R&B-inflected pop that’s both retro and modern, with the infectious song “Rehab” perhaps the most striking example. Allen’s album, which produced the hits “Smile” and “Little Things,” is also beguiling. Though he started out as a DJ, Ronson has lately become a hot producer, and his nomination this year also takes into account his own critically acclaimed album, Version.
