Leona Lewis, “Bleeding Love,” Spirit
Yet another of the recent crop of British soul singers (see Adele, above), Leona Lewis has a different pedigree than some others: She was the winner of Season 3 of The X Factor, the English equivalent of American Idol. Simon Cowell is one of the producers of and judges on that show, too, and early on he championed Lewis, whose sure vocals have been compared to Whitney Houston and others. The striking 23-year-old’s first UK hit was, ironically, a cover of American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson’s “A Moment Like This,” but it wasn’t until “Bleeding Love” that the U.S. embraced her. Cowell co-produced the album and single, and presumably did not insult her in the studio.
Producers: Simon Cowell, Clive Davis, Ryan "Alias" Tedder. Engineer/mixers: Craig Durrance, Phil Tan, Tedder.
