Clarence Fender

Clarence "Leo" Fender—the inventor of the Fender Stratocaster, Telecaster and other guitars, basses and amplifiers (born August 10, 1909, died 3/21/1991)—will be remembered with a Technical Grammy Award in February. Born in 1909 near Anaheim, Calif., Fender worked as a radio repairman, and as a sideline also worked on customers' guitar pickups. Catching the bug to invent a new instrument, Fender first introduced the Precision bass in 1950 and the Stratocaster in 1954, which quickly became staples of the Motown and Stax era of soul music. Fender's handiwork is still evident in a wide range of music, having been embraced by such players as Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix and more.
