2008 Technical Grammy Award, Company

Ampex Corporation
Founded by Alexander M. Poniatoff (the A-M-P in "Ampex"), Ampex began building audio recorders after the end of World War II, starting with its model 200, with the first sales going to Bing Crosby Enterprises. During the years, Ampex innovations were many. With the concept for an 8-track in mind, Les Paul met with Ampex in 1953 to create new record/play and erase heads, and very low-level/high-impedance switching circuitry for monitoring previous tracks while overdubbing new ones. The first custom Sel-Sync 8-track went to Paul two years later for $10,000 and the era of multitracking was born. A year later, in another historic first, Ampex developed the practical videotape recorder.

In 1959, Ampex acquired tape manufacturer Orradio Industries, which became the Ampex Magnetic Tape Division. From the 1960s through the 1980s, Ampex's hardware and tape divisions prospered and led to the development of world-class magnetic tape and enduring products such as the AG-440, MM Series multitracks and the ATR-102 mastering deck—still considered by many to be the finest reel-to-reel recorder ever made.
