There was a time, not so very long ago, when nearly all "live albums" were recorded by remote trucks. Occasionally, you would find a band - such as the Grateful Dead - who were serious about keeping an archive of all their performances for posterity and so made simple stereo recordings from the soundboard's feed, but they were the exception rather than the rule in the '60s and '70s.
