The 2013 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio, Calif., is pictured on April 12, 2013

Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival 2013 kicked off the first of two identical weekends on April 12, 2013—a warm sunny, perfect day. When seeing the iconic Ferris wheel and smelling fresh kettle corn, this venue may fool the average person into thinking they are entering an amped up county fair. The oasis is completely cradled in colored lights. There are strings of balloons that must surely be connected to the moon, a holographic snail with his large friend the dragonfly, and an endless party raging at the core of the festival grounds: the DoLaB. In reality, this must be the closest thing to crossing over to Pinocchio’s Pleasure Island.

Over the two scheduled weekends, organizers were expecting to host up to 90,000 music goers in the desert town of Indio, Calif. For the first time since the inaugural Coachella Festival in 1999, each weekend featured the same lineup. To keep two stages and three tents pumping with sound, promoter Goldenvoice brought in headliners such as Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Band of Horses, Metric, Dropkick Murphys, Phoenix, The Lumineers, Vampire Weekend, Hot Chip, and Franz Ferdinand, as well as every generation’s favorites: Jurassic 5, Johnny Marr, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, Dinosaur Jr., and New Order.

Every afternoon seemed to be a charmed time of day as the sun started to tuck itself behind the horizon. There was a moment of bliss when the ground was still warm, but an evening breeze took the edge off the heat, which created a golden slot for bands like Local Natives, Passion Pit, Portugal. The Man, Violent Femmes, Tame Impala, Of Monsters and Men, and Social Distortion.

Other than a 20-minute delay at the Gobi for Janelle Monae, who played an excellent set that was totally worth the wait, most all performances kept to a pretty strict schedule—especially at the main Coachella Stage, where on Friday night, Modest Mouse was asked to wrap it up. Unfortunately, on Saturday, April 13, the wind started to pick up and never stopped. By Sunday night Wu-Tang Clan played to a packed house that endured a sandstorm at the Outdoor Theatre, as well as the Red Hot Chili Peppers on the main stage, where Anthony Kiedis said he felt like Lawrence of Arabia.
