This Month in Mix
Avatar Studios in New York City hosted several notable sessions during the month of June. In Studio A, which features a Neve 8068 console, David Foster worked with engineer Humberto Gatica doing additional recording with Peter Cincotti; Peter Doris served as Pro Tools operator/assistant engineer. Branford Marsalis recorded for his Jazz Honors Series 2, with Rob Hunter engineering and Chad Lupo assisting. Joshua Redman recorded with engineer James Farber, assisted by Eddie Jackson. Also, Neil Dorfsman recorded with producer/percussionist Mino Cinelu for an album by France’s Henri Salvador, with Anthony Ruotolo assisting.
Studio B, which has an SSL 9000 J Series console, hosted Dr. John, who overdubbed piano parts for Universal France artist Eddy Mitchell, working with producer “Chiquito,” engineer Jay Newland and assistant engineer Chad Lupo. Producer Tony Verderosa and engineer Christian "Wicked" Wicht overdubbed and mixed commercial spots for V8, with Lupo assisting. David Bendeth produced, engineered and mixed tracks for Virgin Records band I’m a Robot and was also assisted by Lupo. Chris Shaw mixed Vagrant Records artist John Ralston assisted by Eddie Jackson. Producer Sushi Kosugi and engineer Dave Darlington completed mixes for Japanese artist KAT-TUN, assisted by Ruotolo.
Producer/musician Steven Bernstein recorded and mixed radio spots for Amstel Light in Avatar’s Neve VRP72–equipped Studio C, with Ruotolo engineering and Lupo assisting. Jazz/fusion guitarist Mike Moreno worked on an album to be recorded, mixed and mastered at Avatar; Ruotolo engineered and Eddie Jackson assisted. Producer Manfred Eicher recorded with John Abercrombie for ECM, with Farber engineering and Brian Montgomery assisting. Guitarist Jakob Bro recorded a new album with engineer Farber and assistant Jackson. Bassist Kengo Nakamura also recorded a new album with engineer Joe Ferla, assisted by Montgomery.
In Studio G, Rich Costey mixed tracks for Warner Bros. Records band Mastodon on Avatar’s SSL 4000 G+ console, assisted by Jim Keller, and Rich Costey mixed tracks for Interscope band Brand New, also assisted by Keller. Recent visitors to Avatar’s Pro Tools suite, Studio E, include Bebel Gilberto, Counting Crows, Roberta Flack, Megan McCauley and Amos Lee.
Lastly, in Avatar’s mastering room, Kevorkian Mastering, Fred Kevorkian mastered songs for Rufus Wainwright and Gomez, as well as albums by The X’s, Locksley and the Burns Sisters.
