This Month in Mix
Avatar Studios in New York City hosted several recording, mixing and mastering sessions during September. The Chris Potter Tentet recorded a new release for the Verve label in Avatar’s Studio A, which is equipped with a Neve 8068 console. Potter’s sessions were produced by Dave Holland, with James Farber engineering and Brian Montgomery assisting. Dream Theater also recorded a self-produced album in Studio A with engineer Paul Northfield and assistant engineer Chad Lupo.
In Studio B, which is equipped with an SSL 9000 J Series console, Chris Shaw mixed Panic! at the Disco’s track for the movie Nightmare Before Christmas, assisted by Lupo. Trumpeter Chris Botti overdubbed parts for the soundtrack for Love Is In the Air; Doug Cuomo produced, Frank Wolf engineered and Anthony Ruotolo assisted. Roberta Flack recorded overdubs, with Ricky Jordan producing, Montgomery engineering and Lupo assisting. Ralph MacDonald also recorded overdubs, engineered by Montgomery with Justin Gerrish assisting. Gary Chester recently did a 5.1 surround mix of a score for an upcoming film, Body & Soul, by Wycliffe Gordon. Stuart Math produced and Montgomery assisted.
The ABC network’s Knights of Prosperity series shot a scene in Avatar’s Neve VRP72-equipped Studio C. The John Scofield Trio also recorded sessions produced by Scofield, with engineer Farber and assistant Ruotolo. Abbey Lincoln recorded with engineer Jay Newland and Montgomery assisting. Lastly, the John Fedchock Big Band, with Fedchock producing, recorded with engineer Paul Wickliffe, assisted by Ruotolo and Gerrish.
In Studio G, equipped with an SSL 4000 G+, Mr. Bangladesh produced Interscope artist M.I.A., who recorded overdubs with Avatar engineer Peter Doris, assisted by Rick Kwan.
Mastering engineer Fred Kevorkian completed mastering and sound restoration on full-length live shows from Phish, including early shows performed by the band in Colorado in 1988. Kevorkian also mastered the Flyleaf single “Fully Alive” for Octone Records and mastered an album by Norwegian band X Lover that was produced by Martin Bisi.
