Plug-ins are in use almost every day in any music production. What's your go-to plug-in? What's the oddest use you've put a plug-in into effect? E-mail the staff at mixeditorial@mixonline.com.
Mix magazine and Blastwave FX present the Blastwave FX Sound Design Competition, a contest challenging participants to showcase their creativity by designing a soundtrack for a 30-second commercial spot titled "Balloons" using sounds provided by Blastwave FX. Celebrity judges—including Richard King (2009 Academy Award winner for Dark Knight), Dane Davis (2000 Academy Award winner for Matrix) and Charles Deenen (2009 Golden Reel Nominee for Need for Speed: Undercover)—will select the winner, who will receive the Blastdrive, a 400 GB HD sound effects library retailing for $6,000.
After registering, participants will download a free sound effects pack with 60 royalty-free sounds to use as a basic sonic palette. Blastwave FX allows and encourages participants to process and manipulate the sounds, so long as all of the original sounds are from this provided sound effects pack.
The deadline for submissions is September 15, 2009.
The Blastdrive is a sound effects library containing 31,700 high definition sound effects and the Blastwave FX Search Engine. The winner will also receive a one-year subscription to Mix magazine.
The "Balloons" video was produced by Peking, a directing duo based in New York City who say that they both live in “feverish states of over-stimulation.” Peking has garnered numerous awards for their work in the commercial world including honors at the June 2009 AICP Show at MOMA, a 2009 Kodak Vision Award, and a 2009 Addy Award for Balloons.
Blastwave FX develops next-generation sound effects libraries for professional audio production. Headed by Ric Viers, author of the Sound Effects Bible, the company's design and engineering teams push the sound envelope with innovative product formats (such as USB flash drives and downloads), rich metadata, multichannel libraries and high resolution audio. Blastwave FX libraries are created by sound designers for sound designers, and offer more than 33,000 native 24-bit/96kHz sounds.
