CEntrance has released its Ideal Driver ($39.95) for FireWire audio interfaces. The Ideal Driver’s Windows audio software is said to offer one-third of the latency and higher stability than drivers that typically ship with FireWire audio interfaces.
The Ideal Driver bypasses the Windows audio engine to reduce recording latency. It is compatible with ASIO 2, GSIF-2 and MIDI applications, and supports sample rates of 44.1 through 192 kHz at 16-bit or 24-bit resolution.
CEntrance states that the Ideal Driver offers easy installation and robust performance while achieving latencies as low as 5.9 ms. To measure the true round-trip latency, CEntrance offers a free download of the Latency Test Utility for comparing different drivers and optimizing a DAW-based recording setup.
CEntrance developed the software to be compatible with most commercially available audio hardware, including those from Alesis, Apogee, Behringer, Focusrite, Mackie, M-Audio, PreSonus and Tascam, as well as most ASIO and GSIF software applications. The company plans to add support for other audio interfaces.
