Focusrite has introduced the Liquid Mix, a 32-channel hardware device with onboard DSP that can host 32 classic EQs and 32 vintage compressors simultaneously. Each of Liquid Mix’s 32 channels provides compressor and EQ emulations selected from a pool of high-quality vintage and modern-day classics. Forty compressors and 20 EQs are available out of the box, and an expanding library is also available online.
A 7-band EQ can be constructed from separate EQ sections in each of the unit’s 32 channels. Each channel appears as a separate VST/Audio Units/RTAS effect within the sequencer and will work within all major applications, including Pro Tools.
Liquid Mix uses the same patented Dynamic Convolution process as Focusrite’s Liquid Channel. Dynamic Convolution uses processing power to sample the effect of a classic processor on a series of audio pulses at different gain settings and frequencies. In Liquid Mix, this processing is done using onboard DSP, rather than the computer’s CPU.
Liquid Mix’s DSP is housed within a desktop controller that connects to a computer via FireWire, which also provides bus power. Users can control each channel from the desktop unit or from within a sequencer, using a GUI that functions like a plug-in.
An optional expansion card (sold separately) increases the number of available channels at higher sample rates.
The Mac version of Liquid Mix is targeted to ship in the second quarter of 2006. The PC version is expected to follow later in the year. For more information, visit www.focusrite.com.
