Harris Corporation Broadcast Communications division (BCD) has introduced its PR&E StereoMixer® digital, the newest member of the VistaMax™ family of products, an all-digital console designed for smaller markets. The board supports analog and digital inputs and outputs, allowing radio stations to transition to digital at their own time frame. And with its completely digital mixing architecture and considerable flexibility, medium to large market radio stations can use the StereoMixer digital for smaller studio applications while retaining the innovation associated with larger Harris PR&E digital consoles.
Following the BMXdigital™ and recently introduced RMXdigital™ on-air consoles, the StereoMixer digital on-air console begins shipping in spring 2005. It will be available in both tabletop and rackmount versions.
The entire Harris PR&E VistaMax family of products will be on display at NAB 2005, booth #C1907.
In other Harris news, the BCD has re-iterated its support of multichannel digital radio in light of the FCC’s announcement on March 8, 2005, that clarified FCC policy on multiple audio streams in digital IBOC transmissions. The statement specifically comments on experimental licensing of secondary program services, such as National Public Radio’s (NPR) Tomorrow Radio, citing encouraging test results of Tomorrow Radio applications.
“Multichannel radio has long been a significant factor in the evolution of our radio product portfolio, and today, only Harris can deliver a complete Tomorrow Radio solution,” said Debra Huttenburg, VP and general manager of the Harris Broadcast Communications division's Radio Broadcast Systems business unit. “It’s our belief that multichannel broadcasting is the most exciting aspect of HD radio adoption, as it offers a business proposition for radio stations beyond improved audio quality. The enabling of secondary programming services presents a great opportunity for terrestrial radio broadcasters to drive alternative revenue streams and compete more effectively with emerging digital services. We’re fortunate to have been closely involved in the Tomorrow Radio testing phase and look forward to adding our continued support to further this exciting movement.”
