Enrique Gonzalez Muller (left) gets moving with PSM engineer Michael Romanowski
Producer Enrique Gonzalez Müller recently brought two of his projects to Paul Stubblebine Mastering & DVD in San Francisco: Italian sensation “L’Aura” for Sony Music and the latest project from former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted.
L’Aura’s (www.l-aura.com) album was recorded and mixed in Italy, but Muller specifically requested PSM engineer Michael Romanowski for the finishing touches. “I told L’Aura’s management team that I always master with Michael Romanowski,” says Muller. “I’ve worked with him for five years. To me, the hardest and most important thing is to find a good team. Nurture it, watch it grow. There has to be talent, and there has got to be a vibe. Michael and I clicked from the first day I worked with him. We’re a great team. For my projects I always wind up doing everything myself—production, engineering, mixing—but that last step I delegate to Michael. It’s like giving away your kid! And I always feel totally comfortable doing that with him.”
Since 1990, Newsted has been recording at his Chophouse studios with a diverse crowd of rock, jazz and hip hop players. For his current endeavor, dubbed HEARd of eleMEnts, Newsted brought in slide guitarist Roy Rogers. “Roy Rogers is the living link between the old blues and the modern blues,” says Newsted. “He’s been playing longer with Clapton, B.B. (King), John Lee Hooker and everyone than most of us. He brings royalty to the project.”
Of Newsted’s project, Muller says, “It’s really an accomplishment. Different people coming together from around the world to express themselves, have fun and mix all the diverse elements they’ve picked up on their individual travels.”
