Danley Sound Labs’ SH-100 and DTS-20 form the backbone of the cutting-edge sound system in the new Badon H. Brown Performance Pavilion in the Aiken Center for the Arts in Aiken, S.C. The SH-100 is a wide-dispersion, fully horn-loaded full-range loudspeaker, and the Danley DTS-20 is a high-output, extreme low-frequency response subwoofer.
The speakers are integral to the 7.1 surround sound system designed and installed in the space by dB Audio & Video (www.dbaudioandvideo.com).
"[The Danley products] were key to getting this job done," says Ivan Beaver, dB's chief engineer. "Because of their low-Q (wide-dispersion) design, which allows for a blending of sounds and prevents the ear from localizing sound to the speaker, you feel like you're in the middle of the sound field with the SH-100. It's a well-behaved speaker that provides great pattern control, and that's important in a surround sound situation where you want to keep the sound in the areas that you do and keep it out of the areas that you don't.”
In addition to working well in the surround sound movie theater application, the seven SH-100 loudspeakers and the single DTS-20 sub deployed in the hall deliver great sound for other events, including performing arts shows, parties, art presentations or jazz concerts, or a music or speech application. According to Beaver, "Another part of what makes the SH-100s perform so well in the space is their phase response, which allows greater gain before feedback. That makes the spoken word easier to hear."
The Danley speakers also are ideally suited to work hand-in-hand with an artificial acoustic reverb enhancement system that Beaver himself designed and deployed in the performance hall's sound system. Dubbed B-Verb, the system takes the ambient sound in the room and adds additional reverberation and distribution around the room. A Yamaha 01V96 mixer provides the additional microphone inputs and does the routing/EQ/reverb and this feeds the 7.1 surround system.
"The acoustics of the room are effectively changed, so at the push of a button, you can experience sound in a different environment," Beaver says. "Other types of artificial enhancement systems on the market only change the sound of the performer. This system brings in the whole audience."
While the speakers' design is critical to the overall sound quality that dB delivered, their placement in the hall—an open space with no permanent seating—was essential. To get the most out of the eight speakers, Beaver positioned one SH-100 on each side wall of the room, two on either side of a perforated screen, two on the back wall and one behind the screen. The DTS-20 is flown above the screen, tucked in behind an acoustic treatment "cloud," as are the SH-100s, which are visually hidden by the clouds.
