Dynacord Cobra-4 line arrays were recently brought out for Hookahville 25, the spring 2006 installment of the bi-annual jam band festival held at Legend Valley in Thornville, Ohio. Formerly known as Buckeye Lake, the outdoor venue was a favorite Eastern U.S. show stop for the Grateful Dead. Ekoostik Hookah headlined both nights, supported by special guests that included Blues Traveler. AA Sound (www.aasound.com) supplied the Cobra rig, which was paired up with a Midas Heritage 1000 front-of-house console from DBS Audio (www.dbsound.net).
“The Cobra rig sounded phenomenal,” says Will Roth of AA Sound. “This is first time I’ve done Hookahville; I’ve done events at Legend Valley before, and the Cobra system has really upped the ante there. It rocked the crowd’s socks off, and the organizers were equally impressed.
“We call this rig the ‘Cobra-10’: a total of two Cobra-4 rigs and a Cobra-2," Roth continues. "We flew four far and four top boxes per side. That took us all of 15 minutes! Sixteen PWH subs took care of the low end, [and were] lined up across the front of the stage. A crew of two can set up this P.A. in no time. Whether we’re using a single Cobra-4 system for a smaller indoor event or combining rigs for much larger shows like this, the Cobra concept is all about plug-and-play and ease of use, without cutting corners on coverage, SPL or clarity. We just dialed in the presets for the larger configuration, and we were good to go for 10,000 people.
“We spoke with the engineers for Ekoostik Hookah and Blues Traveler and a couple of the other headline acts, and they had nothing but good things to say, most having heard the Cobra for the first time. The venue is shaped like a large bowl, and when I drove a golf cart to the top of the hill about 900 feet away, the dB meter was still reading 90 and you could still feel tons of low end! That’s pretty amazing from a system with such a small footprint. We first heard about the Cobra from Jason Jacquemain at our Telex/E-V reps CL Pugh. Having used the Cobra for over a year now, I can say that I agree with Jason: When it comes to bang for the buck, the Cobra is in a class of its own.”
