This Month in Mix
Sensaphonics’ 3D Active Ambient is an IEM system that adds full-range, natural ambient sound to the mix. By embedding a highly sensitive, precision-equalized microphone within each custom-molded, soft-gel silicone earpiece, Sensaphonics engineers have added the actual ambient soundfield—at unity gain and with accurate directional cues—into the monitor mix. The ambient sound picked up at the ears is routed to the compact 3D bodypack, where it is combined with the artist’s monitor mix using Active Signal Processing (patent-pending) for ultra-smooth frequency response and full-bandwidth dynamic range performance.
The supplied bodypack acts as both preamplifier and mixer, providing the user with full control of the ambient input level through two operating modes, selected at the flip of a switch. In Performance mode, the in-ear mix is controlled normally, with ambient sound level set inside the bodypack to the user’s choice of levels (anywhere from “full” to “off”). In Full Ambient mode, the onstage sound is presented at unity gain, while monitor levels are dynamically reduced to permit conversation.
The 3D Active Ambient can also work as an adjunct to a standard wireless IEM system or as a stand-alone wired IEM. External bodypack controls include switches for power and operating mode, while five LEDs signal operating conditions at a glance. Inside, a volume control for ambience level and a limiter defeat switch are easily accessible. The system is conservatively rated to operate for five hours on a 9V alkaline battery.
