Dave Moulton (left) and Craig Roush discussed a variety of topics in a packed house at Sunday morning’s Professional Panel during the First Annual Student Summit at Webster University in St. Louis.

The first annual AES Central Region Regional Student Summit took place at Webster University in St. Louis from Friday, March 2 through Sunday, March 4. This was the first event of its kind under the auspices of AES. It was a great opportunity for our students and others from the Central Region, some of whom cannot attend the conventions in New York, California or Europe, to mingle with their peers from other educational institutions, as well as professionals.

The event was a smashing success with more than 200 students from Georgia, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Kansas, Tennessee, Ohio, and of course, Missouri; about 35 educators; and 50 professionals as attendees. Keynote speakers Dave Moulton and Craig Roush were a huge hit with students and professionals alike.

There were panels and tutorials on such topics as Internships and Entry Level Positions, the Future of Analog, Aesthetics, Studio Ownership, Did the Internet Kill the CD Star, Women in Audio, Sound Reinforcement, and Restoring Vintage Gear, to name a few. A recording competition offered great prizes in both classical and non-classical categories.

It was more than just work and networking, with a social mixer on Friday night and the award-winning band Gentleman Auction House on Saturday night (which was part of a sound reinforcement tutorial for some, and a fun night out for others).

This concept emerged from a meeting of the AES Education Committee. We discussed different ways to get students together with professionals in their area, and ways to get students together from nearby areas, such as schools in the Boston area or the New York area, where there are many schools offering audio that are close to each other. We took the concept one step further, proposing a conference for students throughout the Central Region, which stretches from Texas to Ohio, from Louisiana to North Dakota.

The Webster University Student Section of the AES is one of the most active student sections in the world, with more than 100 members, staging between three and five events per year. This, along with our geographic location right in the center of the Central Region, make us the ideal section to create, promote and host the first-ever anywhere Student Summit.
