131st AES Convention Master Class Chair Alan Silverman

The Audio Engineering Society announces the Master Class Program for the 131st Convention, which will be held in New York City’s Jacob Javits Convention Center from Thursday, October 20, through Sunday, October 23, 2011.

“Designed to provide authoritative insights into significant technical issues, the Master Class Program represents a high point of every AES Convention,” says 131st Convention Chair Jim Anderson. “Back for a return engagement as AES Convention Master Class Chair, Alan Silverman (pictured) has once again developed a compelling group of extraordinarily accomplished audio industry icons.”

The 131st AES Convention Master Class Program includes "Superstar Sessions," in which Platinum producer/engineer Tony Visconti will present his techniques and experiences culled from producing and collaborating with numerous top recording artists; "Human Hearing 101—How It Works (The Short Version)," presented by Jim Johnston, Chief Scientist for DTS Inc., who will address how the human ear performs frequency analysis, and how that affects everything else related to the human auditory system; Skip Lievsay's presentation, "The Hybrid Edit/Mix Approach to Post-Production Sound," in which Lievsay will use a Pro Tools workstation to illustrate his approach to post-production sound; "The Art Of Recording Large Orchestras for Feature Films," presented by film scoring mixer Gary Chester; and "The Fine Line Between Voicing and Design," presented by Casey Dowdell and Brian Zolner, co-founders of Bricasti Design, who will discuss performance concepts as they relate to the design brief of a digital to analog conversion system.

Mastering engineer and educator Alan Silverman has been active in the AES since 1991 and is the founder of Arf! Mastering in New York City. Releases mastered at Arf! earned six Grammy wins and nominations at recent Grammy and Latin Grammy Awards. Silverman also re-mastered RCA's and MCA's back-catalogs of British super group The Kinks for high-resolution SACD, and restored the soundtrack of the documentary Heartworn Highways for CD release, which was selected by the editors of Stereophile magazine as one of the “66 must-have CDs of all time.”

Silverman teaches the art of mastering to undergrads at the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music at NYU Tisch, and to graduate students in the Tonmeister program at NYU Steinhardt.
