131st AES Convention Workshops/Tutorials Chair Natanya Ford

The Audio Engineering Society announces the Workshops and Tutorials Program for the 131st AES Convention, which will be held in New York City's Jacob Javits Center from Thursday, October 20 through Sunday, October 23, 2011.

“In a convention program crowded with illuminating options, Workshops and Tutorials represent beacons of focused knowledge sharing,” says 131st AES Convention Chair Jim Anderson. “Workshops/Tutorials Chair Natanya Ford [pictured] has performed the Herculean task of sifting through dozens of worthwhile submissions to develop eminently relevant presentations. Participants will attain authoritative, detailed information from every event on their ‘don’t miss’ lists.”

AES Workshop presentations include The Mobile Generation of Music Creation and Production, presented by Chair Jay LeBoeuf, who will preside over a panel (TBA) that will explore how technology is enabling mobile devices, cloud computing and innovative software algorithms to shape the music creation and production process; Grateful Dead Europe '72, a Workshop that will reconvene the production/engineering team that restored, mixed, and mastered more than 70 hours of music recorded in 1972 as the Grateful Dead toured Europe for a forthcoming box set from Rhino Records; Sound Quality Evaluation, chaired by Frederik Nagel, in which panelists Søren Bech, Poppy Crum, Schuyler Quackenbush, and Nick Zacharov will cover listening test options; and Audio Asset Restoration, with Chair Ed Outwater and panelists Chuck Ainlay, Jeff Anthony, and Bob Ludwig, will review procedures for "rescuing" improperly archived assets.

Tutorial Sessions include Delay FX, in which Alex Case of the University of Massachusetts will provide comprehensive insights into delay; in MP3 Can Sound Good, presenters Schuyler Quackenbush and Thomas Sporer will suggest ways to develop robust methods to characterize audio quality, e.g. double-blind tests, and appropriately trained listeners; Poppy Crum will present Noise on the Brain—Hearing Damage on the Other Side, offering new research on the effects of acoustic and chemical trauma, and considering recent developments in chemically preserving hearing and combating these conditions with supplements as common as Vitamin C; and Justin Paterson will present Drum and Percussion Programming.

Other Workshops and Tutorials include:

• Ear Training for Mastering Engineers
• Acoustics for Sound Reinforcement
• Got Metadata? Historical, Cultural & Future Issues of Information Association for Archiving Audio Materials
• File Formats for Higher Resolution Audio
• What Every Sound Engineer Should Know About the Voice
