Analoguetube AT-101

Analoguetube is shipping its AT-101 re-creation of the original Fairchild 670 stereo limiter, with the first unit in the U.S. going into Archer Records' Music+Arts Studio, a facility owned by Archer Records, an independent record label and music production studio in Memphis, Tenn.

“We are delighted to have our new AT-101 compressor in service at Archer Records’ Music+Arts Studio,” says Ward Archer. “It has been worth the wait and Simon [Saywood, AT owner] kept us regularly updated with his progress with photos as he was building it. And speaking of that, it is very well built—I would guess even better than the original Fairchild 670."

Housed within a 1900-era limestone building (which formerly housed the popular Sounds Unreel Studios) in the heart of historic midtown Memphis, the Music+Arts recording studio was designed by David Cherry with consultation from George Augspurger and is built around an all-discrete API Vision 5.1 analog mixing console. The control room also features a 5.1 PMC monitoring system and a large flat-panel LCD monitor for film and video mixing. The tracking room is designed to facilitate live sessions with excellent lines of sight, a robust, all-discrete 8-channel headphone cue, three isolation rooms and an additional flat-panel LCD monitor for recording to film.

The AT-101 is built using traditional point-to-point wiring methods and standard turret component mounts. The audio path and power supply are free from any printed circuit boards. Like the original Fairchild 670, the AT-101 is completely assembled by hand and uses high-quality modern components, such as Grayhill switches, Sowter transformers, Hovland capacitors and a new-generation 6386 remote cut-off triode developed to replace the original 50-year-old tubes.

Controls on each channel include input gain, AC threshold, DC threshold, 6-position time-constant switches and metering switches. Improvements on the original include a hinged front panel, stereo-link switch and a power supply mod with controlled heater voltage switch-on to help extend the life of critical tubes from power-ups. Options include several front panel color choices, a full bypass modification, foam-lined flight case and cooling fan unit.
