For ZUMANITY: Another Side of Cirque du Soleil at New York-New York Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, FOH and monitor mixing, and electronic acoustic enhancements are all handled by a sound system that features Level Control Systems’ Matrix3, including the company’s CueConsole 2 and CueStation 4. The system was installed by Pro Sound, Las Vegas.

Paul Gerrity, principal in charge of sound and video systems design at Auerback/Pollock/Friedlander, worked closely with sound designer Jonathan Deans to design a system that would meet the diverse needs of the show, yet maintain as small a control footprint as possible in the intimate 1,200-seat theater. To accomplish this, CueConsole 2 was specified. Apple Macintosh dual-G4 computers with multiple monitors augment the FOH and monitor mixing control surfaces.

“CueConsole was the only theatrical mixing system that could fit the desired footprint in the theater, yet provide all of the necessary mixing control,” said Gerrity. “Matrix3 also proved ideal for monitor mixing.” The FOH system provides 144 inputs and 96 outputs; the monitor system supplies 88 inputs and 48 outputs, configured as 12 stereo and 10 mono mixes plus stereo PFL/AFL. CueStation 4’s new client/server architecture allows multiple users to work on the system simultaneously, which allows concurrent programming and monitoring of the system from multiple points in the theater.

Another requirement of the audio system was to help fulfill acoustical objectives. From the delicate unamplified grand piano to driving modern rock, the score demanded a room whose acoustics could be changed on cue. LCS’ Variable Room Acoustics System (VRAS) was selected by acoustical consultants, Pelton/Marsh/Kansella. PMK’s George Kindler explained, “VRAS provides and extremely natural and programmable acoustic enhancement. In addition, because it was integrated in the main matrix, cost savings were realized because the system loudspeakers provide double-duty as enhancement loudspeakers.”
