The M-Audio Octane is a pro 8-channel microphone preamplifier with ADAT Lightpipe output optimized for multichannel digital recording. Each of the eight channels features the preamp technology found in the company’s DMP3 mic preamp.

The ADAT Lightpipe output allows for seamless digital connectivity of all eight channels to multichannel digital equipment such as ADATs and digital mixers. Two word clock connectors provide synchronization with other digital devices, including multiple Octanes. Internal sync rates are selectable between 44.1 kHz and 48 kHz, and the unit slaves to external sync rates ranging from 33 kHz to 59 kHz. The individual preamp outs on each channel also allow connection to any type of analog mixer or recorder with 1/4-inch line inputs, which allow Octane to serve as an 8-channel A/D converter.

Other features include +48-volt phantom power switchable from the front panel for channels 1 through 4 and channels 5 through 8, respectively; a phase reverse switch is available on every other channel for stereo-miking applications; channels 7 and 8 feature the option of M-S matrix encoding with width control; and channel 1 also offers a 12dB/octave low-cut filter at 80 Hz to aid in eliminating rumble.

This 2U rack unit also boasts 24-bit resolution throughout the signal chain and delivers signal-to-noise ratio and dynamic range such as 133 dB for instrument inputs and 120 dB for microphone inputs. Frequency response is 20 to 20k Hz for all inputs (+/- 0.11 dB at mid gain for mic inputs, +/- 0.03 dB at mid gain for instrument inputs).

Octane is currently shipping at an MSRP of $749.95. For more information, click here. For more product announcements, visit mixonline.com/products_new_products/index.htm.
