Genelec 8260A

Genelec is now shipping its new 8260A Three-Way DSP System ($TBA). The 8260A is said to break new ground in electro-acoustic design, as its mechanical, acoustical and signal-processing designs are linked closely together. The 8260A features major advances in audio driver technology, integrated with a sophisticated enclosure design and Genelec’s proprietary Minimum Diffraction Coaxial (MDC) mid-/high-driver technology.

This coaxial driver design is said to provide extremely accurate imaging and improved sound quality, both on the acoustical axis as well as off-axis. Genelec states that the 8260A's frequency response is very smooth and leads to outstanding clarity and definition of the inner details of the audio. The 8260A combines a coaxial driver (MDC) with a modern waveguide technology (Genelec’s Directivity Control Waveguide / DCW), ensuring that drivers couple coherently over their full operating bandwidth, and create coincident mid-frequency/high-frequency point source.

As a new member of the TEC Award-winning 8200 Series, the 8260A features Genelec DSP signal processing responsible for all loudspeaker functions, such as the crossover filters, driver compensation response, driver position alignment, room response alignment, calibration and equalization-related filters, as well as distance compensating levels/delays. The Genelec Loudspeaker Manager (GLM) software allows the 8260A to be used together with other 8200 Series DSP monitors and 7200 Series subwoofers in the same setup. Genelec AutoCal fully automated room calibration and sound system alignment method promises consistent and accurate frequency response for a multichannel audio system in widely varying room environments.

Genelec forms the Directivity Control Waveguide (DCW) by blending the new Minimum Diffraction Coaxial (MDC) driver surface perfectly with the enclosure’s front shape to provide extremely accurate control of the speaker’s directivity. This acoustically optimized smooth DCW provides astoundingly flat on-axis and off-axis frequency response.

The midrange driver cone forms a smooth, continuous surface between the tweeter and the enclosure. This prevents acoustical diffractions. Diffractions are a major cause of uneven high frequency response in traditional coaxial drivers. The monitor's smooth midrange surface is said to contribute to a perfect DCW behavior. The treble and midrange drivers couple coherently over their full operating bandwidths as a single coincident point source.

In order to improve frequency and power responses, Genelec has designed a rugged enclosure, featuring acoustically optimized rounded edges and gently curved front and sides. The minimized cabinet edge diffraction is said to offer unsurpassed frequency response and yield superb imaging qualities.

Genelec’s 8260A Three-Way DSP System is now available. For more information, visit Genelec's 8260A Web page.
