Majer at Freudenhaus Studio
Producer and engineer Patrik Majer installed a Solid State Logic AWS 900 Analogue Workstation in his Berlin-based studio, Freudenhaus Studio. “The AWS 900 is a marvelous piece of equipment, very sophisticated and a great idea by the people at SSL,” Majer says. “I was already familiar with SSL consoles so getting to grips with the AWS 900 was really very easy. I truly believe this is the most modern way to record and I’m delighted with the results I’m achieving.”
Majer’s Freudenhaus Studio has a main control room, two recording rooms and a programming suite. It is equipped with a Pro Tools HD|3 system, an Otari MTR90 and a selection of outboard equipment from manufacturers such as Helios, Focusrite, Lexicon, Avalon and EMT.
Majer replaced his Pro Control 24 with an AWS 900 in order to combine analog sound with the advantages of the AWS 900, including control room monitoring, more inputs and a “comfortable” DAW controller. He states: “I recently carried out a number of tests to see whether I achieved a better sound using external summing amps, rather than mixing with the digital summing amps in Pro Tools,” he explains. “The results were certainly revealing. Using the AWS 900’s analog circuitry, it was possible to achieve more transparency, more depth and much more dynamic range. In my opinion the AWS 900 offers the perfect solution to this dilemma as it allows you to use your favorite DAW for mixing and sum in an analog way.”
Majer is currently working on a number of projects, including tracking the sophomore effort of Echo Award–winning act Wir sind Helden, whose first album he produced in 2003. Other credits include Rosenstolz, No Angels, Lemonbabies, Philip Boa and Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds.
