Rock City Sound Inc., a Red Hook, New York-based audio contractor, recently decided to purchase new sound equipment by Chevin Research Inc., a supplier of high-quality amplifiers.
Having worked with Chevin A3000 amplifiers for two years, company president, Shelton Lindsay, purchased several of Chevin's latest-generation amplifiers, the A Series Q900 quad power amp. One of the Chevin's newest entries in its 4-channel amplifier family, the Q900 represents a turn to diversify its lineup of amplifiers used in live events.
Lindsay reports that, "The 900s specs were such that we bought into the idea that it would have the same performance features of the A3000, and so far it's more than lived up to those expectations. The 900 is just a more robust package in that in the same amount of space that the 3000 occupies it has four channels of power. It's a very high-quality, very responsive amp that, so far, has been incredibly dependable."
Since acquiring four Q900s six months ago, Rock City has used the amps in a variety of smaller applications in which high-quality sound is needed. "Main front P.A. speakers is one application where the 900 has proved itself," he says. "Smaller, bi-amplified cabinets that have to have a good, powerful, yet transparent, high-end can benefit from the 900. It's not the most powerful or the lightest amp we have, but it sounds fabulous."
Lindsay has the same praise for the Chevin A3000 amps; with about 30 A3000s in his inventory, he’s had the 2-channel model for about two years.
Lindsay estimates that Chevins are used in about 20 percent of his jobs. "Both the 900 and the 3000 perform well and we use them interchangeably. The only difference is two channels vs. four channels. When you have an application that requires a couple of speakers that need to sound brilliant, Chevin amps work.
