Howling Music, a producer of original music for advertising based in North Hollywood, Calif. has launched a new, full-service production office in Nashville. The company’s aim is to broaden its access to emerging musical talent, both composers and performers, by tapping into Nashville’s rich music scene.
Howling Music principal David Grow (pictured) states that Nashville has always intrigued him as a source of musical talent that has been largely unexplored by the advertising industry. “Los Angeles has a large pool of musical talent, but it has been pretty thoroughly mined for ad work,” he says. “Nashville, by contrast, is filled with amazing artists and players, a pool of talent roughly twice the size of L.A.’s, yet they have been remarkably under-utilized for ad music, and that creates a great opportunity for our clients.”
Recent Nashville projects for the company have included spots for the American Medical Association from Chicago agency Lou Beres & Associates. “We’re thrilled to come to Nashville,” says Beres' Chief Creative Officer Andy Madorsky. “These AMA spots were really music-driven and very emotional. We were looking for a house that could deliver something with both emotional wallop and authenticity. We certainly found it with Howling Music.”
According to Grow, Nashville has been mistakenly associated solely with country music. “Nashville is the new L.A.,” he says. “There is an amazingly huge and diverse scene here, which includes virtually every musical genre imaginable, including a thriving underground scene, even a surprising amount of very serious jazz. They don’t call it Music City for nothing.”
The production offices for Howling Music Nashville include two fully equipped recording studios. The company will maintain a small local staff while Grow and fellow staff composers Nick Brown, Jorgen Carlsson and Peter Slantsker will move between the company’s Los Angeles headquarters and the new office as required by individual projects.
“With today’s technology, we can really work anywhere while continuing to serve our clients throughout the country and around the world,” Grow adds.
To that end, Grow says that Howling Music will soon open a third office in Dublin, Ireland in order to tap into the wealth of artists from the UK and other countries in Europe. “Some of the most incredible and ground-breaking music in the world is happening in places other than New York and Los Angeles,” he observed. “We want to be where great music is happening.”
