New York City–based, Grammy Award–winning producer/engineer Scott Harding, known to the worldwide musical community as Scotty Hard, was the victim of a car crash on February 15, 2008. Harding was returning home from a late-night mixing session when the cab he was occupying was broadsided by a stolen car. The impact crushed Harding’s T5 vertebrae, leaving him partially paralyzed.
Harding’s condition is reported as extremely serious and, like many dedicated musicians, he is without health insurance and faces very large medical and legal fees.
There is a short-term need to raise cash, and Harding’s friends and colleagues have united to form the Scotty Hard Trust, a special account established to help handle Harding’s financial needs through private monetary donations. Concerned citizens—whether they are musicians, producers, engineers or music fans—are encouraged to contribute whatever they can to help Harding, who has done notable music production work for the last two decades.
Harding’s production credits include Chris Rock, the John Spencer Blues Explosion, Wu-Tang Clan, Black Sheep, Medeski, Martin & Wood, the Charlie Hunter Trio, Crash Test Dummies, DJ Logic, Mike Ladd, DJ Olive, Vernon Reid, Stereo MC’s, Morcheeba, Prince Paul, and many more.
“Scotty helped to define the sound of hip-hop in the late 1980s and early 90s,” says Brooklyn-based engineer/producer Joel Hamilton. “This could have been any one of us, leaving the studio late at night, and having a drunk driver crash into our cab or car service. Scotty is an asset to the music community at large, and is in need of our help.”
