TC Electronic is now shipping its Konnekt 8 ($375 MSRP) audio interface for Mac OS X and Windows. Konnekt 8 includes Steinberg Cubase LE and features two IMPACT mic preamps, which are switchable as dedicated hi-Z guitar inputs or balanced line inputs; two analog controlled balanced outputs; two auxiliary line inputs for monitoring external devices; two coaxial S/PDIF (stereo) I/Os; and MIDI and FireWire connectivity. The unit can also be used as a stand-alone mixer.
TC Electronic's NEAR (Network Expandable Audio Recording) technology allows users to connect up to four units for additional I/O. Multiple devices can be connected to a computer, and two users with a networked Konnekt 8 can monitor each other directly in real time. Konnekt 8 offers an analog volume control as well as two headphone outputs, one of which includes a speaker muting function that mutes the speaker automatically when the headphone jack is plugged in.
The Konnekt 8 is based on the new DICE II digital interface chip from TC Applied Technologies. According to TC Electronic, DICE II provides a stable clock rate and ensures digital signal integrity using patent-pending Jitter Elimination Technology (JET). Konnekt 8 also includes low-latency drivers for Mac OS X (including the new Intel-based Macs), Windows XP and all audio applications that support WDM, ASIO and Core Audio drivers.
