On the Transmigration of Souls (Nonesuch), an orchestral work by composer John Adams, has been nominated for the Best Classical Album of 2004 Grammy Award.
Commissioned by the New York Philharmonic and Lincoln Center, the piece was created as a tribute to the victims of the September 11, 2001 attack on the World Trade Center.
Masque Sounds’ (East Rutherford, NJ) director of recording services John Kilgore reports that the album features performances by the New York Choral Artists and the Brooklyn Youth Choir conducted by NY Philharmonic New Music Director Lorin Maazel, with a soundscape performed live by Mark Grey. The piece was recorded by Lawrence Rock at Avery Fisher Hall during its September, 2002 premiere.
“While all four performances were beautifully done, I drew most of the final mix from the very first which seemed to embody an especially high level of energy and emotion,” Kilgore says. “Mixing on Pro Tools enabled me to pull sections from 40 tracks of material from each performance, and weave them together for the most compelling effect.” Kilgore, brought a well-rounded perspective to the project. Equally conversant with jazz, theater and classical music, his credits include mixing the1998 Grammy-winning Steve Reich: Music for 18 Musicians.
“The creative team on this project was extraordinary,” Kilgore concludes. “Lawrence Rock, who co-produced with John Adams also engineered, and Bob Ludwig of Gateway in Portland, ME mastered. The combination of the adult and children’s choruses and the incredible performance by the NY Philharmonic make this one of the most poignant projects I’ve ever mixed.”
