Olympus is introducing the new LS-100 linear PCM audio recording device ($399; available in February 2012). The latest edition to the company's LS Series offers uncompressed 24-bit/96kHz recording and features two internal 90-degree directional stereo condenser microphones that are said to capture lower-bass frequencies and louder sound with less clipping; two ¼-inch XLR/standard phone combination inputs; and multitrack recording with 2-channel simultaneous recording and 8-channel playback.

The two microphones offer a frequency response of 20 to 20k Hz, and are said to support sound pressure levels down to 140 dB. Audio and system circuitry are separated on the Olympus LS-100 to minimize sound degradation and keep the signal true. A switchable low-cut filter enables users to eliminate low-frequency sound at two different settings, 100 Hz or 300 Hz. Unwanted background noises can be greatly minimized.

Other tools include a tuner, metronome and Lissajous measurement, which detects and displays the phase difference between the left and right external microphones from the sound source on the 2-inch backlight LCD—ideal for broadcasting studios. When burning a CD, the Olympus LS-100 can be connected directly to a CD drive.

The Olympus LS-100 also provides overdub capabilities, and the Playback Synchro Recording feature enables recording of an additional track while listening to another.

Files are saved to the internal 4GB memory or on SD (up to 2GB), SDHC (up to 32 GB) and SDXC (up to 64 GB) cards. The LS-100 operates on one rechargeable lithium-ion battery.
