Olympus LS-10

Known for its precision optics, portable digital voice recorders and dictation systems for business, Olympus unveiled the LS-10, a pocket-sized stereo recorder that stores audio as uncompressed 24-bit/96kHz linear PCM WAV files, as well as WMA and MP3 formats.

The compact, 5.8-ounce LS-10 has 2 GB of internal memory and a SD/SDHC card slot that accommodates Secure Digital removable media. Files can be offloaded via USB or with a simple SD card reader to your DAW of choice (Mac or PC), or to Steinberg Cubase LE 4 software, which is bundled with the unit. Max recording time is 12 hours on two AA batteries.

Features include two built-in cardioid mics; built-in stereo speakers for field monitoring; manual recording level (a defeatable AGC mode is also available); and a 1.8-inch backlit LCD that shows system status, setup menus, running time, battery life and level metering. Analog I/Os include 1/8-inch jacks for headphone out, external stereo mic input and unbalanced line input.

The LS-10 is slated to ship later this month at a street price of $399 and comes with removable windscreen, carry case, analog audio cable, USB cable and Cubase LE 4 software. Options include an infrared remote control, AC adapter, conference mics (ME30W), rechargeable Ni-MH battery and charger, zoom microphone and a headset.
