Steinberg Media Technologies GmbH introduces Nuendo 4 ($1,799), offering new features for audio post-production, studio production and live recording. Nuendo 4 is compatible with Windows XP and Windows Vista, and both Intel and PowerPC-based Macintosh computers running Mac OS X Version 10.4. Steinberg expects that Nuendo 4 will be available from October 2007.

Nuendo 4's new automation system unites the functionality found on traditional hardware mixing consoles with the flexibility of a modern DAW environment. New features include a Preview mode, Fill commands, Punch Logs, Virgin Territories and Touch Collect Assistant.

MediaBay is a new file management system for audio, video and other media files. MediaBay browses, archives, retrieves and searches media files across any connected drive. Using intelligent database technology, user-definable tags and other features, MediaBay allows you to instantly pull up and filter search results, smart file management and more.

Nuendo 4 also has 38 new surround-capable VST3 audio effects plug-ins that cover dynamics, spatial FX and filtering. The plug-ins also work with sidechain processing and add drag-and-drop and copy/paste functionality. Standard on each channel is a new VST3 Channel EQ.

Advanced post-production editing commands promise faster editing workflows, including new options for moving, placing and trimming audio. The Post Filter is engineered specifically for audio post, and features special options for removing unwanted noises from audio material.

Any track is now able to record audio from any summing object, such as groups or FX returns. Common recording configurations, such as stems and print master recording, can now be set up.

The optional Nuendo Expansion Kit (NEK; $299) offers Cubase Music Tools for Nuendo 4. This add-on module contains Cubase scoring and notation, the Cubase MIDI Drum Editor, four integrated VST instruments and support for the MusicXML standard.

Nuendo 3 customers can update to Nuendo 4 for $249 without the NEK module, or $399 with the NEK module.
