Vintage King Audio, a leading dealer of high-end new and vintage recording equipment, announces that it has selected Sound and Structure (SaS)—a company based in Southern California that specializes in studio design, construction, acoustic treatment and modernist restoration—to spearhead the design and construction of a new audio facility in Los Angeles’ Echo Park neighborhood. In partnership with Infrasonic Sound Recording Company (a recording studio, vinyl, CD and digital mastering facility), the 6,000-square-foot building is scheduled to open in fall 2011; SaS has already begun construction.

Located in the heart of Echo Park’s thriving music scene, the new facility will serve as Vintage King Audio’s flagship showroom, displaying new and vintage recording consoles, analog and digital rack-mount equipment, microphones, software, speakers and Vintage King Premium equipment from manufacturers like Neve, Barefoot Sound, Shadow Hills Industries, Inward Connections, Electrodyne, Helios and ProAc. The space will be equipped with several listening stations, affording clients the opportunity to hear their own music, through any equipment on the showroom floor. Each station will have a personal audio mixer for real-time A/B comparisons via headphones and a variety of speakers.

The second floor of 1176 Sunset will house two dedicated audio mastering suites and two vinyl cutting studios, equipped with Infrasonic Sound’s vintage Neumann and Scully vinyl lathes. Principal mastering engineer Pete Lyman will relocate from Infrasonic’s current facility in East Los Angeles, bringing with him a discography and client roster that includes Ben Harper, Shooter Jennings, Best Coast, No Age, People Under the Stairs, Norah Jones and countless Los Angeles bands, many of whom also record at Infrasonic. The adjacent business offices will include Off Central Public Relations, the boutique PR firm that represents both Vintage King and Infrasonic Sound in addition to a roster of independent artists and audio industry clients.

Sound and Structure founder Robert Paul Maune indicates that some of the new facility’s features will include SaS’ trademark sawtooth semi-absorbent wall design; a tuned listening environment with more a dozen studio monitors available for critical listening, featuring a Custom Series 75 mixing console powered by Neve; “The Mic Locker,” containing more than 30 vocal microphones of all price ranges, wired up and ready to go; and SaS' exclusive Quadratic Pipe Array [QPA], based on a concept employed by BBC Studios in the 1960s that provides broadband sound absorption and diffusion across a wide range of frequencies.

“These are enterprises that I really believe in,” says Maune, who has more than 15 years experience in studio design. “Vintage King and Infrasonic have not only given me the freedom to create the spaces I’ve dreamed of, but also posed challenges I think only SaS can meet. Serious acoustics require custom design and construction; every item in this new space has an acoustic significance, which is why SaS is taking the acoustic totality into consideration while working on such a large endeavor.”

Mike Nehra, co-owner of Vintage King Audio, adds, “Vintage King and Infrasonic’s new L.A. facility will be acoustically, aesthetically and architecturally breathtaking, thanks in no small part to SaS and Robert Maune’s vision. Vintage King takes pride in not just being an audio equipment dealership, but also an integral part of the music community, which is why we’ve partnered with Infrasonic Sound. In just over five years, the studio has established an incredible reputation in the music scene of Los Angeles and beyond. We’re looking forward to making an even larger mark on the community with this new facility.”
