Unstoppable is an action thriller film directed by Tony Scott, written by Mark Bomback and starring Denzel Washington and Chris Pine. The film tells the story of a runaway train and the two men (Washington and Pine) who attempt to stop it. Unstoppable is inspired by the“Crazy Eights” unmanned train incident in 2001. In this exclusive sound-for-film profile, we talk with sound re-recording mixer Beau Borders, supervising sound editor Mark Stoeckinger, and sound designers Alan Rankin, Ann Scibell and Ken J. Johnson.

The Sound Show gives the general public a chance to go behind the scenes of the creation of a major motion picture and hear the details of the sophisticated sound work crafted by key members the movie’s team of audio artisans. Excerpts from the movie are presented with special “pre-dub” mixes to illustrate the variety of elements used to create a sonic environment of moods and thrills.

Guiding us through their processes is award-winning supervising sound editor/sound designer/re-recording mixer Randy Thom, sound designer Al Nelson, sound re-recording mixer Gary Rizzo, director Chris Sanders and film editor Darren Holmes. This event was produced by the Motion Picture Sound Editors organization, Skywalker Sound, DreamWorks Animation and Paramount Pictures.

SoundWorks Collection is happy to partner with GameSoundCon to bring you one of the many in-depth sessions offered at this unique two-day conference. In this exclusive video, founder and creator of GameSoundCon, Brian Schmidt, presents the opening session, "Introduction to Game Audio: How Games Are Different From Anything You’ve Worked on Before.”

This session provides an introduction and exploration into the many ways in which videogame music and sound design are fundamentally different from linear media such as television or film. It also covers what to expect when working on a game, and how being part of a game team is very different from being hired to score or do sound design for more traditional media.

Composer Mike Reagan Sound for Film Profile

The SoundWorks Collections visits composer Mike Reagan in his Los Angeles–based studio to explore his work on the upcoming videogame God of War: Ghost of Sparta and learn about his creative approach. Reagan has enjoyed a successful career as a composer, songwriter and music producer whose award-winning music has been featured in several film, TV and videogame projects. His recent film score for Unbeatable Harold complements his previous songwriting and production for Oliver Stone’s Any Given Sunday and Sony Pictures/Jim Henson Productions’ Elmo in Grouchland, which garnered a Grammy Award for Best Children’s Soundtrack.

Reagan's compositions have been recorded all over the world, including L.A.’s top studios, the Bay Area’s Skywalker Sound and Abbey Road studio in London. He has served as composer for Sony’s best-selling God of War franchise (2005-2010), winner of the Interactive Academy Award for music composition, the Game Audio Network Guild Music of the Year and Best Original Soundtrack. His score for Conan (THQ, 2007) also earned critical acclaim, notably from Variety magazine recognizing the “epic and cinematic scope” and saying, “The soundtrack is as professionally produced as any blockbuster adventure movie.”

Recent music projects include God of War: Ghost of Sparta and Darksiders, as well as the Emmy Award–winning Wow Wow Wubbzy! and Ape Escape cartoon series for which he received a Telly Award for Best Use of Music in TV. Listen for Reagan's music airing on Nickelodeon, NickToon and Nick Jr.

Take an exclusive tour of the Walt Disney Studios (Burbank, Calif.) hosted by Gil Gagnon, VP of post-production services. The Walt Disney Studios Post-Production Services has a rich history in dubbing, dating back to the early 1940s when Fantasia was mixed in the Main Theatre. Fantasia went on to win several technical achievement awards from the Academy as it was one of the first to mix in Stereo and incorporated an early form of surround sound termed “Fantasound.”

The sound editorial department is staffed by a talented crew including two-time Oscar-winner George Watter II, along with Robert Sephton and Thomas de Gorter. The facilities include Pro Tools and 5.1 sound-design rooms. In addition, this world-class facility provides complete sound integration and compatibility with the mixing stages in a conveniently located campus-like environment in Burbank, Calif.

One of the most accomplished Foley artists in Hollywood, Hecker has contributed to more than 200 films in a career spanning almost three decades. Among his recent credits are 2012, The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3Angel & DemonsWatchmen and the Spiderman trilogy. At Todd-AO, Hecker will serve as supervising Foley artist, and while continuing to work on films, will also seek to grow the facility’s Foley department.

The Cinema Audio Society comprises sound mixers and associates from the film and television industries. The Society was founded to create a proper channel of communication between the related sound crafts and between those instrumental to the production and distribution of film and television soundtracks. The CAS Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Sound Mixing are presented annually to the winning re-recording and production mixers in each of four categories: Television Non-Fiction, Variety or Music Series or Special; Television Series; Television Movies or Mini-Series; and Motion Pictures. The competition is open to feature films and television programs released or aired during the calendar year, and the winners are revealed in a sealed envelope ceremony at the Cinema Audio Society Annual Awards Banquet.

For the 2010 CAS Awards, the SoundWorks Collection partnered with the CAS to provide exclusive backstage interviews with the winners of this year's awards show.
