Engineer/producer Zach McNees recorded most of the 18 tracks on singer/songwriter Julia Nunes’ beautiful and sometimes whimsical album, Settle Down, at The Buddy Project in Astoria, N.Y. Tracked, edited and mixed in Pro Tools, the album is part solo (voice-and-ukulele), and part “full band” (drums, double bass, and the odd percussion piece or kalimba added). At the core of Nunes’ sound is her angelic voice and passionate playing on that ukulele, which McNees captures with a DI and a Telefunken AR-51, an approach he developed after hearing her play live for the first time, and after they’d already tracked the single “Stay Awake.” “‘Stay Awake’ is the only song where we didn’t use the DI,” McNees says. “I tried to compensate by cranking the low end on the uke tracks as best I could in the mix.”
