Southeast Billy Joe Walker Jr. is hitting his stride in Nashville. He's producing tracks for Mindy McCready's Capitol debut at Sound Emporium with engineer Ed Seay and assistant John Saylor. Vocals and overdubs were slated at Our New Place Studio with engineers Alan Schulman and Chris Stone. Walker is also scheduled to produce sides for Tracy Byrd's benefit album for the Wonders of Wildlife and Travis Tritt's next project for Columbia...Faith Hill went glam at Emerald (Nashville), recording spots for Cover Girl. Producer Dann Huff was busy doing separate overdub projects with Lonestar and Billy Ray Cyrus. Engineers Jeff Balding and Mark Hagen helped out...Hipster happenings at Chase Park Transduction in Athens, GA: Avant popsters Olivia Tremor Control worked with David Barbe, backing Japanese pop star Kahimi Karie for her new EP. Producer Steve Albini toiled on up-and-coming singer/songwriter Shannon Wright's forthcoming Touch and Go CD...No blues at House of Blues Studios in Memphis: Engineer/producer Greg Archilla and engineer Kevin Page have been hard at work in Studio A with South Carolina singer/songwriter Edwin McCain, Atlanta popsters Garrison Field and new Warner Bros. artists Extra Very. Engineer David Cole cut overdubs for Bob Seger's new self-produced record.

Northeast Not just a Gigolo: David Lee Roth recently volunteered his vocal efforts to Songs of Love, a nonprofit that produces and records personalized songs for seriously ill children. Roth joined Billy Joel, Ronnie Spector and others with his rock 'n' big band rendition of "Ashley Abernathy." Engineer Casey Chester tracked the song at Irving's Place (NYC) and said: "I've always been a fan of David's and thought the session might get a little raucous. He came in on time, totally ready to work. No entourage, just extremely positive vibes and a great attitude"...Andrew Loog Oldman and his son Max worked at Trod Nossel Recording Studios (Wallingford, CT) before heading home to South America. His new book, Stoned, which will undoubtedly chronicle his adventures as the Rolling Stones' first manager, will be published in the UK this spring and in the U.S. in the fall... Marv's brother Steve Albert recorded voice-overs for Battle Dome, Columbia/Tri-Star/Sony's extreme sports competition, at Pomann Sound in NYC...Mix "Insider Audio" columnist Paul Lehrman mixed Ballet Mocanique (see Mix, March 2000) at Sounds Interesting in Middleborough, MA. Jonathan Wyner of M-Works Mastering (Cambridge, MA) engineered and mastered the piece with assistant Richard Furch...Gary Mallaber (Bruce Springsteen) produced new material for 53 Days at Audio Magic in Buffalo, NY. Dave St. Onge engineered, and Tom Robinson assisted...In Boston, producer Joe Ross and engineers Holbrook Garcia and Carl Beatty completed work on "For Adeline" for USA songwriting competition winner Adrianne. Bob Horn ended up mixing at the Love Shack in Nashville.

North Central New Cargo: Punk band Sparechange00 tracked songs for their next Cargo CD at Immortal Productions in Canal Fulton, OH, with producer/engineer Cal Moore and assistant engineer Jeremiah Isley...Backstreet Boys flew into Airborne Audio (Lenexa, KS) to track vocals for two songs slated for the DreamWorks animated feature The Road to El Dorado. Larry Gann engineered with Patrick Leonard producing...The home of A Prairie Home Companion, Minnesota Public Radio, recently welcomed a new addition: a 32-channel API Legacy Console. The desk replaces Studio P's Neve, and it's being used for post-production on Companion and The Writer's Almanac, among other programs.

Southwest A little bit of stardust drifted into Encore Recording Studio (Nacogdoches, TX). Willie Nelson worked on a new project that is said to resemble his beloved Stardust album. Producer Paul Buskirk and singer/songwriter Freddie Powers accompanied Nelson...Meanwhile at Pedernales Studio (Austin, TX), Nelson made his presence felt once more. Engineer Eric Paul and assistant Boo MacLeod mixed three unreleased tracks for the Sony Legacy re-release of the country legend's Red-Headed Stranger.

Southern California Headbangers had a ball at Conway Recording Studios in Hollywood: Producer Tom Werman and engineer Eddie Delana cut tracks for the upcoming Warner Bros. movie Metal God with Mark Wahlberg and Jennifer Anniston. In the process, Wahlberg, Jason Bonham and Zack Wylde apparently got medieval in the studio...Here, Toto: Toto's latest CD, Mindfields, reunites the band with original vocalist Bobby Kimball. Elliot Scheiner tracked the group to Quantegy 499 tape at Royaltone Studios (L.A.), the overdubs were done at The Manor with engineer Steve McMillan, and the final mix was at Capitol Studios...Jazz vocalist Dianne Reeves was captured by producer/keyboardist George Duke, engineer Eric Zobler and the Design FX Remote Recording team, Michael May and Scott Peets, at SIR Soundstage (Hollywood). The recording is slated for release later this year on Blue Note...Always hard to keep track of all the goings-on at Track Record (North Hollywood): Warren G worked on material on the eve of a national tour. Charles Nasser engineered with assistant Ai Fujisaki. Warren returned shortly after to produce songs for Kim Berley with Nasser and assistant Stephen Wells. Producer Thom Wilson (Offspring) finished producing and engineering the TVT debut for Ignite. Eric Williams assisted. Producer Shep Crawford and engineer Anne Catalino produced and arranged tracks for Boyz II Men with help from Williams and Fujisaki...BBMak attacked their music-making duties at Ocean Way Recording (Hollywood) with producer Rob Cavallo and engineer Ed Thacker. Their new Hollywood CD, Sooner or Later, is scheduled for release this month...In L.A., Wonderland wrapped up their Jericho/Sire debut, The End of Bliss, with producer John Porter (The Smiths, Roxy Music) and engineer Mark Dearnley...Vocalist/guitarist Brad Stanfield and engineer Colin Mitchell have been holed up in Rumbo Recorders in the San Fernando Valley, producing tunes...Listen to what the lake washed up: Hideaway Mastering (Ramona) planned to organize and produce a recording using instruments constructed of the 500-year-old logs recovered from Lake Superior.

Northwest Quasi's Janet Weiss and Sam Coomes were recently in Jackpot! (Portland, OR), recording with Go-Betweens members Robert Forster and Grant McLennan for the legendary Aussie band's reunion album. Larry Crane engineered, and Forster and McLennan produced... Wyclef Jean has been getting busy at The Plant in Sausalito, CA: He tracked and mixed his own music in The Garden with producer Jerry Duplessis and engineers Andy Grassi and Leff Lefferts, and then he moved to Studio A to produce MCA artist Melky Sedeck with engineers Bob Brown and Billy Konkel. Melissa Etheridge and her opening artist Jeremy Toback also were in, taping a live set for Live at the Plant...Over at OffPlanet Studios (San Francisco), hip hop impresario Jay-Z dropped in to produce Sony artists Christian, who have taken over Studio C. Funk forefather George Clinton has also been in working on various projects...At Private Radio (Seattle), Patrick Gray worked with the punkers in Ample as well as Flamethrower and The Fongs. Jack Endino was in with Hotrod Lunatics and Black Halos. Later, Endino moved to Ironwood (Seattle) to work with the bassist from Titas, Nando Reis, on another album for Warner Brasil...Studio 880 (Oakland, CA) recently hosted 3Eb with Stephen Jenkins of Third Eye Blind. Philip Steir also tracked Luaka Bop artists Los Amigos Invisibles and remixed The Spooks. The facility's second tracking room was scheduled to be completed in April.

Studio News David Frank, co-writer and co-producer of Top Ten tunes such as Christina Aguilera's "Genie in a Bottle," recently plugged in a pair of Spirit Digital 328s at his home studio, Canyon Reverb, in Topanga, CA. The 328s are cascaded to provide 32-track digital recording and 84 inputs...SoundCastle (L.A.) opened a completely redesigned studio with an 80-channel SSL SL 9000 J console... Grotto Studios in L.A. added two new DA7s...King Sound (L.A.) added a Pro Tools|24 to its Studer A827.
