The visual is fixed on the screen. It’s a frame and nothing beyond the edges of the frame really exists. But sound isn’t tethered to the visual frame and it can lift off the screen. It can hang over the audience, it can move within the space unconfined by the visual frame. It’s invisible and lives in the ether. It lives in the auditorium or your living room.

On working with so many distinctive and idiosyncratic filmmakers Stateman:
Besides working so much with Quentin, I’ve done all of Wolfgang Petersen’s American films and done Oliver Stone’s films for the past 25 years. I should add I also did almost all of John Hughes’ movies—something like 15 of them.

I have gotten great personal satisfaction from working with directors who are visionaries. Over time they are developing their style and their voice, and I work very closely with them defining emotionally the director’s voice—their sound. Each one is very different and has different emotional roots. Each has a style is unique to him, identifiable, and it’s part of what has been a rewarding responsibility—to help a director explore his voice.
