Korg has launched the Legacy Collection, a virtualinstrument/effects pack that offers software synthesizer versions ofits MS-20 and Polysix analog synthesizers, the WAVESTATION advancedvector synthesizer, a slew of high-quality effects and with aspecial-edition MS-20 Controller. The collection also premieres aunique “cell” concept, which combines synths and effectsfor powerful new sounds.
Korg’s newly developed CMT (Component Modeling Technology)models the characteristics of the electronic circuits (transistors,condensers, resistors, etc).
The dual-oscillator, monophonic MS-20 (first released in 1978) isknown for its thick sound, aggressive analog filters and unlimitedcreative patching potential. The MS-20 software synth adds featuressuch as 32-note polyphony, up to 16-voice unison, advanced modulationsettings and MIDI clock synchronization.
The Legacy Collection includes a commemorative, fully functionalUSB-MIDI controller (MS-20iC) for use with the MS-20 soft synth.It’s a 3/4-scale reproduction of the MS-20 that includes avelocity-sensitive keyboard and signal-patching capability.
The Polysix six-voice analog synthesizer was popular for itsfull-sounding voice structure, chorus/phase/ensemble effects, chordmemory and arpeggiator. In addition to faithfully replicating the soundof the original, the Polysix software synthesizer adds the same modernenhancements as the software-based MS-20.
Korg’s proprietary Legacy Cell is a software-based“combination structure” that allows the combination ofsynths (MS-20 and Polysix, two MS-20s, two Polysixes, one MS-20 or onePolysix) with two insert and twp master effects into a singleinstrument that delivers new sounds and textures. (Nineteen effectalgorithms are available for the insert and master effects.) Users canset key and velocity splits or layers, choose velocity curves to switchbetween the synths and map controllers to any synth or effectparameter. The Cell can then be used as a normal VST or AudioUnitsplug-in by any compatible host application or as a stand-alonesynthesizer. Legacy Cell provides 256 rich-sounding programs completewith controller assignments. It also has built-in native support forthe Korg microKONTROL MIDI Studio Controller.
The WAVESTATION synthesizer, with its “advanced vectorsynthesis system,” allowed users to mix or morph between fouroscillators and introduced Wave Sequencing to create evolving patterns.The WAVESTATION software synthesizer provides all original waveforms(including the SR model) and effects, plus the digital oscillators,filters, envelope generators and LFOs that replicate the signature 3-DWAVESTATION sound. All factory preset programs, 550 performances and385 patches are included. The user can also import any WAVESTATIONseries data that has been stored in .SYX format.
The MS-20FX enables the MS-20 to be used as an effect processor,running audio through its filter and modulation parameters. MDE-X makesthe 19 Legacy Cell effects available as effects plug-ins. Both of thesecan be used as VST/AudioUnits effects plug-ins within compatible hostprograms. The Legacy Collection synths can be used on Macintosh OSX/Windows XP in stand-alone form or as VST/AudioUnits plug-ininstruments within a compatible host application.
