Born on March 8, 1971, Slater was a founding member of the Nineties alternative pop band, Third Eye Blind. While he played in the band and produced its first demo tape, he left the group before it recorded the 1997 6x Platinum debut album.

Undeterred, Slater went on to start a variety of groups such as Snake River Conspiracy, Microdot with guitarist George Lynch; Revenge of the Triads with Charlie Clouser (Nine Inch Nails) and Troy Van Leeuwen (Queens of the Stone Age); and others.

In the 2000s, however, he put an increasing focus on producing, mixing and more, working with acts like Slaves on Dope, The Braids, The Disturbers, Enemy, Earshot, Apartment 26, and most notably Queensrÿche, for which he produced Operation: Mindcrime II (2006); American Solider (2009); Dedicated to Chaos (2011); and Frequency Unknown (2013).

Slater’s daughter, Alyssa Carlson, told TMZ that he had kept his liver condition a secret even from her until he wound up in the hospital in November.
